چکیده
We present the first unambiguous case of external variability of an extra–galactic radio source, the CLASS gravitational lens B1600+434, consisting of two images lensed by an edge–on disk galaxy. The VLA 8.5–GHz difference light curve of the lens images shows external variability at the 14.6–σ confidence level. Although the current single–frequency VLA observations cannot conclusively exclude scintillation, several lines of evidence show that it does not dominate the short– term variability. This is supported by an ongoing three–frequency WSRT campaign. If scintillation is the dominant source of this external variability, it would require very different properties of the Galactic ionized ISM towards the two lens images. Microlensing of a superluminal jet component can explain both the rms and time–scale of variability, but requires the halo of the lens galaxy to be filled with ∼ >0.5–M⊙ MACHOs. The current data appears to support microlensing as the dominant source of the observed external variability.

We use observations from the CASTLES survey of gravita-tional lenses to study extinction in 23 lens galaxies with 0 < z l < 1. The median differential extinction between lensed images is ∆E(B −V) = 0.05 mag, and the directly measured extinctions agree with the amount needed to explain the differences between the statistics of radio and (optical) quasar lens surveys. We also measure the first ex...

We are conducting a multi-wavelength (radio, optical, and X-ray) observational campaign to classify, morphologically and physically, a sample of 55 flat-spectrum radio sources dominated by structure on kpc-scales. This sample contains 22 compact-/medium-sized symmetric object candidates, a class of objects thought to be the early stages of the evolution of radio galaxies. The vast majority of t...

We report on one year of photometric monitoring of the ultraluminous BAL quasar APM 08279+5255. The temporal sampling reveals that this gravitationally lensed system has brightened by ∼0.2 mag in 100 days. Two potential causes present themselves; either the variability is intrinsic to the quasar, or it is the result of microlensing by stars in a foreground system. The data is consistent with bo...

Broad band spectra of total and compact–scale radio emission from blazars, used in combination with kinematic information inferred from VLBI monitoring programs, can be applied successfully to better constrain the models of compact jets. We discuss here a " hands-on " approach for tying together the kinematic and spectral properties of radio emission from blazars.
